1,800 lbs of Marijuana- Found entering into the US from Mexico in early February and estimated to be worth ~$1,500,000 (by the oh-so-streetwise, ever-knowledgeable DEA, presumably). As Secretary of State Clinton says, “Our insatiable demand for illegal drugs fuels the drug trade.” And she is right: we spend $9 billion per year on Mexican weed (accounting for an estimated 62% of Mexican cartels’ profits), plus about $36 billion on domestically grown.
Oh, and unless this is true Mexican brick of the lowest quality or is being sold wholesale at rock-bottom prices, the total value estimate is WAY low; unusual for agencies that usually seek to maximize the value/size of any seizures made.
Some quick math here: 1,800 pounds (maybe ~$2,000 per, if bought in bulk = $3,600,000) or = 230,400 1/8ths (say ~$50 per = $11,520,000) or = 806,400 grams (~$15 per = $12,096,000). One could easily argue that in terms of true street-value, by the time it reaches the final buyer/ultimate consumer, it is easily worth closer to $10 million. Huh…
Makes me worry about how much these cartels are really making, if our government has no real insight.
